Highway Days & Holidays
by Julie Boden
A guard looked after Aileen on the train.
In yellow charabanc, Jean felt set free
and Miriam said, ‘No, I won’t complain
that Irene took her bus rides to the sea
for I had picnic days at Corley Rocks.’
Then Gordon smiled. He loved his caravan,
‘She packed the kitchen sink; I packed my socks!
As soon as tools were down,’ he said, ‘we ran,
well – rallied – to some caravanning spot.
I think about those times,’ he said, ‘… a lot.’
