“Mum used to make most of our clothes and she did it beautifully. She made the best button holes and the best fine stitching. When I was a child I never thought of having anything new. I used to look at my sisters’ clothes and looked forward to time when a dress would be mine. When my 16th birthday was coming, mum asked: ‘what would you like for your birthday?’ All my sisters would have chosen clothes, but I said: ‘I’d like some more paints.’ So she honoured my wishes and she bought me some oil paints. And it gave me so much pleasure using them.”
