“We didn’t really go anywhere but our own area, but the first time I saw anything beyond was before the war. We were moving from Pontefract to Birmingham. My sisters and I were sitting at the back of a big removal van with all the furniture inside. I have never been on a motorised vehicle of any kind before. We could see the countryside and I saw poppies for the first time. It was very beautiful, great poppies on the side of the road. They were everywhere, between the hedges and at the roadside along the country lane, just growing.”
